Mr. Miehle was born and raised in the Chicagoland area.  He attended Tulane University with a degree in Organic Chemistry (and humidity!).  He lived in Boston and San Diego, working for medical companies.  In San Diego, he worked with several start-ups, each time selling them to publicly traded companies.  Before moving to Alabama, his last assignment was as President and COO for a publicly traded company.
 
In Birmingham, he started a financial advisory company that educates medical personnel on how retirement plans work.  He is the author of a column that appears in the Alabama Nurse.  He has spoken at numerous nurse practitioner meetings and the state meeting.

Bio: 

Benjamin McMichael is an associate professor at the University of Alabama School of Law. He earned a BS in Mathematical Economics from Wake Forest University and a JD and PhD in law and economics from Vanderbilt University. Before joining the faculty at Alabama, Benjamin completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, where he taught healthcare law and economics. Prior to his fellowship, he served as a law clerk to Judge Carolyn Dineen King on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.   Benjamin’s research focuses primarily on the law and economics of healthcare. He has published extensively on the scope of practice laws governing nurse practitioners and physician assistants. He has also published papers focused on medical malpractice, organ transplantation, and cannabis access laws.

Bio:

Dr. Ashley York is an Associate Professor at Samford University in the Moffett and Sanders School of Nursing. She holds certifications as an Adult-Gerontology nurse practitioner and a Women’s Health nurse practitioner. She has taught undergraduate and graduate-level courses in women’s and adult-related health. She has published and presented on topics such as sleep medicine, menopause, and educational research. She is currently practicing at Pulmonary Associates of the Southeast and Sav-a-life, where she currently cares for adults and adolescents in either sleep medicine or women’s health needs. 

Dr. Hannah Landgrave is an Assistant Professor in the Moffett and Sanders School of Nursing at Samford University and continues to practice as a critical care nurse at UAB Hospital. She is passionate about using her knowledge to produce competent, caring nurses that will contribute to the nursing profession and the patients they serve.

Contraception Update

Dr. Amy Lee is a Clinical Professor and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner with over 33 years of experience in the field of nursing. A nurse practitioner for 28 years, Dr. Lee worked with the gynecology and obstetrics (GYN/OB) residency program of the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) to help mentor and teach the residents in the clinical setting from 2002-2018. During this time, she was the lead clinician for the Family Planning clinic on the East Baltimore campus. From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Lee also served a joint appointment with the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Dr. Lee currently teaches at the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama where she is the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and previously the DNP Program Coordinator.

 

Mary Wade (69 KB)

Mary Wade has been a Family Nurse Practitioner for more than 26 years, having made a career change in nursing. She worked at UAB for 25 years, first as a nurse in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit and then as a nurse practitioner for the Pulmonary Division.  Cystic Fibrosis was the focus of the last 12 years at UAB and in 2009 she established the Nightingale Clinic, a small free clinic for the underserved and homeless at the Church of the Reconciler.

Recently has been treating patients with Substance Abuse or Opioid Abuse Disorder and presently works for SymboCor, LLC, who provide medical and mental health care for Jefferson County Corrections. Ms. Wade works at the jail in downtown Birmingham, where she provides mental health treatment.  She has been married to Wm. Ray Wade for 32 years and has 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren, ages 3-12.

Bio: Christy Cantey is a board-certified nurse practitioner & has been practicing in cardiology for most of her nursing career. She has specialized in Structural Cardiology at Huntsville Hospital for the last 3 years and is currently the program's Strategic Initiatives Lead and clinic NP. Additionally, she is a published author on the subject and enjoys educating her peers on these advancing technologies and the care of patients. She is an active member of the Advanced Practice Council at Huntsville Hospital and also currently pursuing her DNP degree at UAB.

 

Annette Hess_DM (410 KB)

Dr. Hess has been in nursing for more than 35 years and the academic setting teaching pre-licensure and graduate nursing courses for more than 30 years. Currently, she teaches in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctoral programs at Moffett and Sanders School of Nursing at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. She is an advisor, mentor, and project chair for masters and doctoral nursing students. She is a leading expert in the Southeast on the management of diabetes and obesity. She serves on the Board of Directors for the St. Clair Community Health Clinic, Lakeside Hospice, American Diabetes Association Alabama Community Leadership Board, the Alabama Obesity and Diabetes Task Force Committee to improve the outcomes for patients in Alabama, and the Parish Nurses at First Baptist Church of Pell City.

She is widely published and has been involved in several grants. She currently practices two days per week as a family nurse practitioner in 2 clinics (Diabetes Clinic) at the Cooper Green Mercy Health system and at the St. Clair Community Health Care Clinic in Pell City, Al with Dr. Andrea Cherrington and Dr. Dallas Russell. Not only is she a clinical expert in diabetes but also a personal expert in diabetes due to living with type 1 diabetes for 50 years. She wears an insulin pump and has a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Her professional interests include promoting healthier lifestyles and disease prevention.

Dr. Staci Simmons is a clinical assistant professor of graduate programs at the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing, where she also serves as the DNP Program Coordinator.  She received BSN and MSN degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a DNP from the University of Alabama. Dr. Simmons is experienced in pediatric critical care, working in emergency, air medical transport, neonatal, and pediatric intensive care units. A board-certified acute and continuing care pediatric nurse practitioner, Dr. Simmons specializes in neonatal and pediatric congenital heart disease and cardiac conditions.  She practices at Children’s of Alabama in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care and Cardiac Care Units.

Dr. Hooper is an Associate Professor at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

She is a board certified family nurse practitioner. She received her BSN and NP Certificate from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences,

and her MSN and FNP, PhD from the University of Kentucky.  She is a Fellow of the Academy of Urology Nursing and a Fellow of the Association of Nurse Practitioners.

She presently enjoys teaching in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs at UA.

Her interest and clinical expertise are urology and ophthalmology.

Dr. Haamankuli "BJ" is a dedicated clinician and passionate educator. He has over 15 years of experience as a nurse practitioner and 13 years of experience as an educator. In addition to his faculty appointment duties, he serves as a member at large for the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NPAA). While pursuing his DNP, Dr. Haamankuli initiated a post-hospital tobacco cessation program for a local hospital in Birmingham, AL. He has since continued to work on smoking cessation initiatives at a local and state level.

Dr. Letisha Scott is a Clinical Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from The University of Alabama. Dr. Scott is a board-certified Family nurse practitioner with clinical expertise in primary care for pediatrics and adults, emergency nursing, and critical care nursing. Her research focuses on improving cardiovascular health across the lifespan. Dr. Scott is interested in implementing evidence-based practice concepts to decrease minority health disparities, especially in the areas of cardiovascular health, lupus, and cancer screenings.
